The Literary Critic's Shelf of Shame - By Jodi Kantor - Slate Magazine.
This is a fun post from way back -- and refers to a game that probably every graduate student plays in his or her own discipline, sooner or later.
What famous work are you supposed to have read ... or seen ... or heard ... or performed ... or watched but have not?
At this point in my life, as far as Great Works of Literature are concerned, I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never read any Dostoevsky. Like, none. Nary a word. Mind you, there are literally tens of authors that could go on that list and hundreds of titles as well -- but right now? The Dostoevsky thing bugs me.
Why haven't I read anything by FD? Um, Russian surnames are so long I thought I wouldn't be able to remember the characters? Nah, I've read Tolstoy. I've never had time? Don't even go there, HD.
I need to buy a copy of The Brothers Karamazov. And then, quite possibly, to read it.
What items belong on your shelf of shame?
